Before you start

You need a soft tape measure, a helper and a shoelace or string as a locator strap.

  1. 1

    Dress right

Bare-chested in briefs, or in thin base layers.

  2. 2

    Tie locator straps

One round the waist at the navel, one round the hips at the widest point.

  3. 3

    Find landmarks

Base of neck: where the collarbones meet. Knee: the centre of the kneecap.

  4. 4

    Measure twice

Keep the straps in place and read the tape at the same point every time.

Points 1, 2, 12, 13 and 13a are measured with and without your back protector or airbag. Also give us your height (base of neck at the back to just above the ankle bone) and weight in the form at the end.
